Pumpkin Patch Fractions: free Halloween fractions game

The pie contest wants exact slices. Cut each pumpkin into the fraction they ask for.

What is Pumpkin Patch Fractions?

The judges of the pumpkin pie contest are picky: three quarters, two thirds, five eighths, never a crumb more. Cut each pumpkin into equal slices and fill the fraction they ask for, then fill already-cut pumpkins with the same amount, and finally pick which pie has more filling.

Bigger pie
Two pies, two fractions. Which has more filling, or is it the same?

Nine orders in three stages, no timer. Your best score is kept in this browser.

What it trains

Parts of a whole
The bottom number is the number of equal slices, the top how many you take.
Equivalent fractions
1/2, 2/4 and 4/8 are the same amount.
Comparing
Rewrite both fractions with the same bottom number, then compare the tops.

Strategy and tips

Bottom first
The bottom number tells you how many equal slices to cut. The top tells you how many to fill.
Equivalent fractions
Multiply the top and the bottom by the same number: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8.
Compare with the same bottom
To compare 2/3 and 3/4, turn both into twelfths: 8/12 and 9/12.
Count the slices
The slice buttons under the pumpkin show how many you filled.

Why play Pumpkin Patch Fractions?

Fractions show up in recipes, measures, money and time. Seeing them as slices of a whole is the step that makes the rest click, and a pumpkin pie is a very good whole.
