Haunted Wi-Fi: free Halloween game to secure your home Wi-Fi

The haunted house router is wide open. Lock it down before the poltergeists stream your secrets.

What is Haunted Wi-Fi?

The haunted house has three routers, and every one is wide open: a factory password, an old encryption, a stranger on the network, a fake “FreeCandyWiFi”. Each router screen lists six settings. Make the right call on each one and a ghost is banished; make the wrong one and a ghost slips back in.

Haunted Wi-Fi is a free Halloween game about home network security. The haunted house has three routers, and every one is wide open: the factory admin password, an old encryption, a stranger called GH0ST-PC on the network, remote management switched on, and a tempting open network called FreeCandyWiFi nearby.

Each router screen lists six settings. Pick what to do with each one: a right call banishes a ghost, a wrong call lets one back in, and every call is explained in plain words. Scan the router before the candle burns out.

How to play

Check every setting
Six per router: the admin password, the network name, the encryption, updates, devices, guests and more.
Make the call
Pick what to do. A right call banishes a ghost; a wrong one lets one back in and locks the setting. Each call is explained.
Scan before the candle burns out
Scan when you're done. When the candle burns out, the router is scanned as it is.
Score
100 per right call. A router with every call right adds 100 and 2 per second of candle left. 4 ghosts or fewer and the house is ghost-free.
Three levels
Beginner gives two choices per setting and a 150-second candle. Expert has a 60-second candle and keeps every verdict for the scan. Each level keeps its own best score.

Scoring

Each right call scores 100 points. A router with every call right adds 100 and 2 points per second of candle left.

Three routers with six settings each. A wrong call lets a ghost back in; end with 4 ghosts or fewer and the house is ghost-free. Your best score is kept in this browser.

What it trains

Router basics
Changing the admin password, choosing WPA3 or WPA2 and keeping firmware updated.
Fewer open doors
Why WPS, remote management and open networks are risky.
Device hygiene
Spotting unknown devices and putting guests and smart gadgets on their own network.

Strategy and tips

Defaults first
A router's factory admin password is public. Changing it is the single most important fix.
Strong encryption
WEP is broken. Use WPA3, or WPA2 if an old device can't do WPA3.
Fewer open doors
Turn off WPS and remote management unless you really need them.
Know your devices
Remove any device you don't recognise, then change the Wi-Fi password so it can't come back.
Separate the guests
Visitors and smart gadgets go on the guest network, away from your laptops and phones.

Why play Haunted Wi-Fi?

Most home networks are set up once and never touched again, which is exactly what attackers count on. A few minutes in the router settings (a new admin password, modern encryption, updates on, extra features off and a guest network) block the most common ways in. Haunted Wi-Fi turns that checklist into a habit you'll remember.

Frequently asked questions

Is Haunted Wi-Fi free?

Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.

Do I need to know about routers to play?

No. Every setting is explained in plain words, and every call tells you why it was right or wrong.

Is there a time limit?

Each router has a 90-second candle. When it burns out, the router is scanned with the calls you made.

Are the routers and devices real?

No. Every house, device and network name is made up for the game. Check your own router's settings page or app for the real options.
