Spooky Story Builder: free Halloween storytelling game
Six cards, one campfire. Build a tale that gives the gang goosebumps.
What is Spooky Story Builder?
The gang is round the campfire and it's your turn to tell three tales: a lighthouse log, a night bus and an attic radio. Each tale has six beats, from the setup to the last line. Pick one of three cards for each beat and watch the goosebump meter: suspense needs a normal day, a small clue, rising dread and a twist that pays the clue off.
Spooky Story Builder is a free Halloween storytelling game. The gang is round the campfire and it's your turn: three tales to tell, a lighthouse log, a night bus and an attic radio. Each tale has six beats, and for each beat you pick one of three cards.
The goosebump meter reacts to every card. A clear setup, a normal day to break, a small clue, rising dread, a twist that pays the clue off and a quiet last line make the gang shiver. Spoilers, vague lines, cop-outs and lectures make them yawn, and every card explains why.

How to play
- Six beats
- Setup, normal day, first sign, rising dread, twist and last line. Pick one card for each.
- Build suspense
- Show the ordinary, plant a clue, let it creep closer. Spoilers, cop-outs and lectures make the gang yawn.
- Pay off the clue
- A twist that explains the clue you planted earns a bonus and the biggest shiver.
- Score
- 100 per spot-on card, 40 for half there, +50 for a payoff and +100 for a perfect tale.
- Three levels
- Beginner gives two cards per beat with a tip. Expert hides the tips and reactions until the tale is told, with 20 seconds per beat. Each level keeps its own best score.
Scoring
Each card scores 100 when it's spot on and 40 when it's half there. A twist that pays off your clue adds 50, and a perfect tale adds 100.
Three tales of six beats, no timer. Your best score is kept in this browser.
What it trains
- Story structure
- Setup, normal day, inciting sign, rising action, twist and ending.
- Suspense
- Showing a clue instead of explaining it, and raising the stakes beat by beat.
- Payoff
- Connecting the ending to something planted earlier.
Strategy and tips
- Show the normal first
- A strange detail only feels strange if we know what usually happens.
- A clue, not a scream
- The first sign should be small and specific. Explaining everything kills the mystery.
- Climb, don't drop
- Each beat should bring the danger closer. A calm week in the middle drains the tension.
- Pay it off
- The best twist explains the clue you planted. A twist from nowhere feels like a cheat.
- End on an image
- A short last line that leaves a question beats a moral or a happy reset.
Why play Spooky Story Builder?
Suspense is structure: what you show, when you hide it and how the end connects to the start. The same pattern powers ghost stories, thrillers, talks and even product launches. Spooky Story Builder trains it with all-ages campfire tales: no gore, just goosebumps.
