Pop-up Apocalypse: free game to spot dark patterns

You just want the recipe. Close every pop-up with the honest button, and dodge the shiny traps.

You just want to read a lemon cake recipe. Cookie walls, fake downloads, scary alerts and sneaky free trials pile up on the page. Close each one the honest way.

Pop-up Apocalypse is a game about dark patterns, the design tricks that push you to click what a website wants. You just want to read a lemon cake recipe, but pop-ups pile up: cookie walls, newsletter guilt trips, fake download buttons, “your device is infected” alerts, free trials that need a card, fake countdowns.

Close each one with the honest button. A trap costs a life and spawns one more pop-up. Each level adds a pop-up; clear all 8 to save the internet.

Close
Only the top pop-up can be clicked. Pick the button that closes it without a catch.
Dodge
Big shiny buttons, fake crosses and guilt-trip links are traps: a trap costs a life and adds a pop-up.
Race
Clear the page before the timer runs out, or lose a life and try the level again.
Climb
Each level adds a pop-up. Clear all 8 to save the internet.
Distrust the shiny button
The biggest, brightest button is usually the one the site wants, not the one you want.
Look for the small text
“Reject all”, “Maybe later” and “Close ad” are often small links.
Fake crosses exist
A ✕ drawn inside an ad is part of the ad. Real close buttons sit on the pop-up's corner or as text.
Guilt is a tactic
“No thanks, I prefer paying full price” is still the right answer.
Websites can't scan you
Virus alerts and update requests from a web page are always fake.

Deceptive interfaces cost people money, data and time. Pop-up Apocalypse builds the reflexes to recognise them: confirmshaming, fake urgency, pre-ticked boxes, disguised ads and scareware.

Is Pop-up Apocalypse free?

Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.

What are dark patterns?

Interface tricks that steer you into choices you didn't mean to make, like hidden reject buttons or pre-ticked boxes.

Are the sites real?

No. Every site and offer in the game is made up.

What happens when I click a trap?

You lose a life and one more pop-up appears on the page.
