Hashtag Hunter: free hashtag strategy game
Pick the niche hashtags that bring the right people, skip the spammy ones.
What is Hashtag Hunter?
One minute, one post after another: a first sourdough loaf for beginner bakers, a pug grooming routine for pug owners, sleep tips for night-shift nurses. Tap the niche hashtags that fit the post and its audience, and skip the broad, off-target and spammy ones before the clock runs out.
Hashtag Hunter is a free one-minute game about hashtag strategy. A post appears with the audience it's meant for, like "5 cheap high-protein vegan lunches" for students going vegan, above a board of eight or nine hashtags. Tap the niche ones that would bring exactly those people, and move on to the next post as soon as you've found them all.
The board is full of traps. Broad tags like #food bury your post among millions. Off-target tags look close but reach the wrong crowd: #ketodiet on a vegan post, #learnfrench on a Spanish lesson, or an unrelated trending event. Spammy tags like #follow4follow bring empty likes. Each wrong tap costs seconds, and every tap explains why.

How to play
- Read the post and audience
- A tag has to fit both the topic and the people the post is for.
- Tap the niche tags
- Find every niche tag of a post to tag it: +20 and the next post. Keys 1 to 9 tap the tags.
- Skip the traps
- Broad tags cost 2 seconds, off-target ones (wrong topic, wrong audience, unrelated trends) 3, spammy ones 4.
- Score
- 10 points per niche tag, ×2 after 3 right in a row, ×3 after 6. A wrong tap resets the combo.
Scoring
Each niche hashtag scores 10 points, ×2 after 3 right taps in a row and ×3 after 6. Finding every niche tag of a post adds 20 and brings the next post.
Wrong taps cost time: 2 seconds for a broad tag, 3 for an off-target one, 4 for a spammy one, and they reset the combo. The run lasts 60 seconds; your best score is kept in this browser.
What it trains
- Hashtag strategy
- Choosing a few specific tags over huge or spammy ones.
- Audience thinking
- Matching tags to the people a post is for, not just its topic.
- Quick judgement
- Spotting lookalike tags under time pressure.
Strategy and tips
- Read the audience line
- Beginners, students, nurses: the right tag fits the people, not just the topic.
- Smaller beats bigger
- A tag with fewer, more specific posts is where your post can actually be found.
- Beware of lookalikes
- Same word, wrong world: #veganleather is vegan, but fashion.
- Never hijack a trend
- A trending event tag on an unrelated post looks spammy and reaches the wrong people.
- Use the number keys
- On a keyboard, keys 1 to 9 tap the tags in board order.
Why play Hashtag Hunter?
Hashtags work like labels in a library: they help the right readers find a post. A few specific tags that match the topic and the audience usually beat a pile of huge or spammy ones. Hashtag Hunter trains that quick judgement, telling niche from broad, off-target and spammy, against the clock.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hashtag Hunter free?
Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.
Are broad hashtags always bad?
Not forbidden, just weak: a post in a tag with millions of others sinks in minutes. In the game they cost 2 seconds, less than off-target or spammy tags.
Are the posts and accounts real?
No. Every post, audience and app is made up. Some hashtags look like ones you may have seen; they are examples of each kind.
Can I play with a keyboard or a screen reader?
Yes. Keys 1 to 9 tap the tags, every tag is a button, and each tap is announced with its kind and the reason.
