What is Emoji Decoder?

๐Ÿซ  ๐Ÿ™ƒ ๐Ÿซก: what do they really mean? An emoji appears with four meanings. Pick the way most people use it online before the minute runs out, and get better at reading tone in messages.

Emoji Decoder is a free 60-second game about what emoji really mean when people use them. The melting face, the upside-down face, the salute, the skull: an emoji appears with four meanings, and you pick the one most people mean online.

It starts with the everyday ones (thumbs up, crossed fingers, eye roll) and moves on to the subtle ones: the face holding back tears, the dotted line face, the cap and the goat. Each answer shows the emoji's official name and its usual meaning.

Strategy and tips

Think tone, not picture
๐Ÿ™ƒ is a smile turned upside down: usually irony, not happiness.
Context changes it
๐Ÿ˜ญ can mean real tears or laughing too hard. The game asks for the most common reading.
Look at the eyes and mouth
Peeking eyes, a grimace or a hand over the mouth carry most of the meaning.
Learn the slang ones
๐Ÿ’€, ๐Ÿ and ๐Ÿงข come from online slang: "I'm dead", greatest of all time, and "cap" for a lie.
Keep the streak
A wrong answer costs 2 seconds and your multiplier.

Why play Emoji Decoder?

Emoji carry tone that words alone don't, and a misread one can turn a joke into an insult. Knowing the common readings makes messages with friends, family and colleagues easier to read and to write.
