Matrix Master: free matrix puzzle game for abstract reasoning

3×3 grids of shapes: find the missing piece.

What is Matrix Master?

Fourteen 3×3 grids of shapes, each with the bottom-right piece missing. Read the rules along the rows (count, rotation, colour, XOR, distribution of three) and pick the piece that completes the grid. The level follows your answers.

Matrix Master is a free puzzle game of 3×3 shape grids, the kind of matrix puzzle found in reasoning tests. The bottom-right piece is missing: read the rules along the rows and pick the piece that completes the grid. Every grid is generated fresh and checked by the game, so exactly one option fits.

The rules start simple (one more shape at each step, one colour per row) and stack up as you climb: arrows that turn by a fixed angle, lines that combine by XOR, and rows that share the same three shapes in a new order. After each answer the game spells out the rules, so a miss still teaches you something.

How to play

Read the rows
Every row follows the same rules: shapes added, an arrow turning, colours, lines, or the same three items in a new order.
Pick the piece
Choose the option that completes the bottom-right square. Exactly one fits every rule.
Climb levels
Two right in a row moves you up a level, a miss moves you down one. Higher levels mix more rules.
Learn
After each pick, the rules of the grid are spelled out.

Scoring

Each right answer scores 10 × the level it was played at. A run is 14 grids.

Two right in a row moves you up a level (up to 8), a miss moves you down one. Higher levels mix more rules and offer 8 options instead of 6.

What it trains

Abstract reasoning
Finding rules hidden in shapes, counts, colours and lines.
Holding several rules
Checking up to four rules at once against each row.
Elimination
Ruling out options that break even one rule.

Strategy and tips

Go row by row
Compare the three cells of the first row, then check the same change holds in the second.
One attribute at a time
Look at count, then colour, then shape, then angle, then lines. Each can follow its own rule.
XOR means cancel
Lines found in both of the first two cells disappear in the third; lines in only one stay.
Three of a kind
If each row holds the same three shapes or colours, the missing one is the one the last row lacks.
Eliminate
Rule out options that break even one rule. The piece left standing is the answer.

Why play Matrix Master?

Matrix puzzles train you to hold several rules in mind and test them against evidence, a habit that helps with data, code and planning. It's practice on a type of puzzle, not a measure of intelligence: your score shows progress within the game.

Frequently asked questions

Is Matrix Master free?

Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.

Does it measure my IQ?

No. It shows a progress score and a level for this game only. It isn't a test and makes no claim about intelligence.

Can a grid have two right answers?

No. Every grid is checked in code: exactly one option makes every row follow a rule.

What is XOR?

Exclusive or: a line shows in the third cell when it's in exactly one of the first two.
