Analogy Forge: free analogy game with words and shapes
Hand is to glove as foot is to…? Forge the link.
What is Analogy Forge?
Twelve analogies, words and shapes. Name the link between the first pair, then forge the same link for the second: a glove covers a hand, so a sock covers a foot. Each answer comes with a one-line explanation.
Analogy Forge is a free analogy game. Each round shows a pair with a hidden link, "hand is to glove", and asks you to forge the same link for a new item: "foot is to…". Word analogies cover opposites, parts and wholes, tools and jobs, young and adult, and measuring instruments, from everyday words to trickier vocabulary.
Shape analogies are generated: a change takes the first shape to the second (a turn, a mirror flip, a new colour, filled or hollow, one more copy) and the same change applies to the third. The game tries every change and every pair of changes to make sure only one option fits, and explains the link after each answer.

How to play
- Name the link
- Put the first pair's relation into a short sentence: covers, grows into, is the opposite of…
- Forge it again
- Pick the option that has the same relation with the third item.
- Shapes too
- Whatever changes from the first shape to the second (turn, mirror, colour, fill, count) happens to the third.
- Climb levels
- Two right in a row moves you up a level, a miss moves you down one.
Scoring
Each right answer scores 10 × the level it was played at. A run is 12 analogies, about half words and half shapes.
Two right in a row moves you up a level (up to 6), a miss moves you down one. Higher levels use harder words and two shape changes at once.
What it trains
- Analogical reasoning
- Naming a relation and carrying it over to a new pair.
- Vocabulary
- Opposites, parts and wholes, tools, jobs and less common words.
- Visual transformations
- Turns, mirror flips, colours, fill and counts on shapes.
Strategy and tips
- Make a sentence
- "A glove covers a hand" is a link you can test. Plug each option into the same sentence.
- Watch the order
- "Puppy is to dog" goes young to adult; keep the same direction for the second pair.
- Beware of near misses
- A shoe is worn on the foot too, but it covers the sock, not the foot directly. Look for the tightest fit.
- For shapes, list the changes
- Turn? Flip? Colour? Fill? Count? Note every change from the first to the second shape.
- Apply them all
- Do every change you found to the third shape, then find that picture among the options.
Why play Analogy Forge?
Analogies are how we explain new ideas with old ones and spot patterns across subjects. Practising them sharpens vocabulary and careful reasoning; the game shows a progress score and a level, not a measure of intelligence.
Frequently asked questions
Is Analogy Forge free?
Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.
What does "A is to B as C is to D" mean?
The link between A and B is the same as the link between C and D, such as "is part of" or "is the opposite of".
Can two options fit?
Word analogies are hand-checked so only one option fits the link. Shape analogies are checked in code against every change the game uses.
Does it measure my IQ?
No. It's a puzzle game with a progress score and a level, not a test.
