First 3 Seconds: free video game to learn scroll-stopping hooks
Viewers swipe fast. Reorder the clip so the first 3 seconds stop the scroll.
What is First 3 Seconds?
Ten short clips from made-up ClipTok creators arrive as storyboard frames in the wrong order. Put the hook in the first 3 seconds, then line up the setup, the build-up, the payoff and the call to action before the clock runs out.
First 3 Seconds is a free game about the most important part of a short video: its opening. Ten clips from made-up ClipTok creators, a mug cake, a squeaky door, a puppy's first snow, arrive as storyboard frames in the wrong order. No dragging needed: tap two frames to swap them, or use the arrow buttons, and post before the clock runs out.
The frame in the top slot plays in the first 3 seconds, so it has to be the hook: a teaser of the result, a bold claim, a question, the best shot or a problem the viewer recognises. After each clip the game names the hook type, explains why it works and why your opener lost viewers if it did, and shows the full order from setup to call to action.

How to play
- Read the storyboard
- Each clip is cut into 3 to 5 frames, shuffled. The top slot plays in the first 3 seconds.
- Find the hook
- Put the moment that stops a scrolling thumb first: a result teaser, a bold claim, a question, the best shot.
- Order the rest
- Tap a frame, then another to swap them, or use the ▲ ▼ buttons. Post before the clock runs out.
- Score
- A right hook scores 100 (×2 after 3 in a row, ×3 after 6) plus up to 30 for speed; every other frame in place adds 20. A wrong hook costs one of 3 lives.
Scoring
A right hook in the first slot scores 100, ×2 after 3 right hooks in a row and ×3 after 6, plus up to 30 for speed. Every other frame in its right place adds 20.
A wrong hook costs one of 3 lives. 10 clips, from 3 frames up to 5, with a shorter clock as you go. Your best score is kept in this browser.
What it trains
- Video hooks
- Spotting the moment that stops a scrolling thumb: a result teaser, a bold claim, a question, the best shot.
- Story structure
- Ordering setup, build-up, payoff and call to action so the hook's promise pays off.
- Editing judgement
- Seeing why slow warm-ups, early payoffs and early follow requests lose viewers.
Strategy and tips
- Tease, don't tell
- Show the result in a way that leaves the how open: the gooey cake, not the full recipe.
- Skip the warm-up
- Car parks, unboxing and "hi everyone" are setup. They belong after the hook.
- Keep the payoff for later
- Opening on the very end leaves nothing to wait for. The payoff is what the clip builds to.
- Ask last
- Follow, save and comment requests go at the end, once you've given something.
- Use the arrows
- The ▲ ▼ buttons and the keyboard move frames one slot at a time; Esc drops a picked frame.
Why play First 3 Seconds?
People decide in a moment whether to keep watching a short video, so creators and brands spend a lot of effort on openings. First 3 Seconds trains the habit of spotting the most gripping moment in a story and leading with it, then ordering the rest so the promise of the hook pays off. The same idea works for presentations, emails and pitches.
Frequently asked questions
Is First 3 Seconds free?
Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.
Are the creators and the app real?
No. ClipTok and every creator, handle and clip are made up for the game.
What happens if my hook is wrong?
You lose one of 3 lives, but frames in the right place still score 20 each, and the game shows the right order with an explanation.
Can I play without dragging?
Yes. Tap a frame, then tap another to swap them, or use the ▲ ▼ buttons. Everything works with a keyboard and a screen reader.
