Doomscroll Escape: free 1-minute game for healthy screen habits
The feed wants your evening. Find the exits before the battery dies.
What is Doomscroll Escape?
A made-up endless feed rolls past with posts and hooks built to keep you scrolling. Hidden among them are the exits: autoplay off, fewer notifications, a time limit, "you're all caught up". Find 4, then put the phone down before the battery dies.
Doomscroll Escape is a free one-minute game about the tricks that keep thumbs scrolling and the settings that help you stop. A made-up feed rolls past: cute videos, "Next video in 3… 2…", "Your 41-day streak ends at midnight!", "Someone you know just posted". Hidden among them are the exits: turning autoplay off, keeping only notifications from people, a 30-minute limit, the "you're all caught up" message, charging the phone outside the bedroom.
Tap the exits and skip the hooks. Every hook you tap drains the battery and explains, kindly, the design trick behind it. Each exit calms the feed and switches off the hook it beats. Find 4, then put the phone down: every second of battery left is a bonus.

How to play
- Find the exits
- Settings and habits that make stopping easier: autoplay off, fewer notifications, time limits, charging the phone outside the bedroom.
- Skip the hooks
- Countdowns, streaks, teasers and drip-fed likes are designed to keep you scrolling. Tapping one costs 5 seconds of battery, a post 2.
- Calm the feed
- Each exit slows the feed and switches off the hook it beats. Keys 1 to 4 tap the cards.
- Put the phone down
- After 4 exits you can leave. Score: 20 per exit plus 2 per second of battery left.
Scoring
20 points per exit you find.
Put the phone down after 4 exits: +2 points per second of battery left.
Tapping a hook drains 5 seconds of battery, a post 2 seconds.
What it trains
- Healthy screen habits
- Know the settings that make stopping easier: autoplay off, fewer notifications, time limits.
- Spotting persuasive design
- Recognise streaks, countdowns, teasers and pull-to-refresh for what they are.
- Intentional phone use
- Decide when to stop instead of letting the feed decide.
Strategy and tips
- Read before you tap
- Exits sound like settings or plans. Hooks sound urgent, vague or like a countdown.
- Watch for urgency
- "Ends at midnight", "don't miss it", "in 3… 2…": urgency is a sign of a hook.
- Beat the hooks
- Autoplay off stops the countdowns; "you're all caught up" ends the refresh loop.
- Leave on time
- Once you have 4 exits, put the phone down: waiting only drains the battery bonus.
- Use the keys
- Keys 1 to 4 tap the cards on screen, and D puts the phone down.
Why play Doomscroll Escape?
Endless feeds, autoplay, streaks and red badges are designed to make stopping harder, so getting pulled in says more about the design than about you. Knowing the tricks by name, and knowing which settings switch them off, makes it easier to use apps on purpose. The game is about noticing and choosing, not about guilt.
Frequently asked questions
Is Doomscroll Escape free?

Is this game saying phones are bad?
No. It's about spotting the design tricks that keep people scrolling longer than they meant to, and the settings that put you back in charge.
Are the apps and posts real?
No. The app, the posts and the numbers are made up for the game.
Can I play with a keyboard or a screen reader?
Yes. Every card is a button with its full text, keys 1 to 4 tap the cards, D puts the phone down, and each tap is explained out loud.
