Cover Me: free game to learn insurance basics
Five life events, one insurance budget. Pick the cover that actually pays out.
What is Cover Me?
A dropped phone, a flooded flat, a cancelled trip, a dented car, a coffee-soaked laptop. For each one, pick the cover by comparing the premium, the deductible and the small print, or keep your money. Then the year plays out and you see what you really paid.
Cover Me is a free game about insurance basics. Five life events, from a dropped phone to a flooded flat, each with a few policies and the option to go without cover.
Compare the premium, the deductible and the small print, pick, then watch the year play out. The score rewards the choice with the lowest expected cost, not luck: sometimes the best choice is no cover at all. All numbers are examples.

How to play
- Premium
- What you pay for the year, whatever happens.
- Deductible
- What you still pay yourself on each claim.
- Small print
- Exclusions can leave your risk uncovered, however cheap the policy.
- Three levels
- Beginner shows each option's expected yearly cost. Expert adds cheap policies with small-print traps and 30 seconds per event. Each level keeps its own best score.
Scoring
Each event scores up to 100: full points for the choice with the lowest expected cost for the year, fewer the further your pick is from it.
Four or five events depending on the level, with 30 seconds each in Expert. Your best score is kept in this browser.
What it trains
- Premium vs deductible
- How the yearly price and the cost of a claim trade off.
- Expected cost
- Weighing a loss by how likely it is.
- Reading exclusions
- Checking that the policy really covers your risk.
Strategy and tips
- Think in a whole year
- Premium + the chance of the event × what a claim still costs you.
- Read the exclusions
- A cheap policy that excludes your risk pays nothing.
- High deductible, low premium
- Fine for risks you could pay for yourself; risky for big losses.
- Insure the big losses
- Small, likely costs are often cheaper to pay yourself.
Why play Cover Me?
Insurance is sold on fear and fine print. Understanding premium, deductible and exclusions turns it into a simple maths question: what does this cover cost me over a year, on average, compared with paying myself?
Frequently asked questions
Is Cover Me free?
Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.
Is this financial advice?
No. The numbers are examples and real policies vary. The game teaches the method, not which insurer to pick.
Why is no cover sometimes the best choice?
When a loss is small or unlikely, the premium can cost more than the expected loss.
What's a deductible?
The part of a claim you pay yourself before the insurer pays the rest.
