Alt Text Ally: a free game about accessible posts

What is Alt Text Ally?

Some of your followers hear your posts through a screen reader. For each photo, pick the alt text that tells them what actually matters, then fix captions that leave people out: no subtitles, emoji walls, hashtags nobody can read aloud.

Alt Text Ally is a free game about accessible posting. Each photo comes with three alt texts: one too vague, one stuffed with detail nobody needs, and one that says what's in the picture and why it matters.

Caption rounds add the other half: subtitles for videos, hashtags written so a screen reader can say them, and emoji used as decoration rather than as whole sentences.

How to play

Describe

Pick the most useful of the alt texts: what's in the photo and why it's posted, in one or two lines.

Fix

On caption rounds, pick every fix the post needs.

Three levels

Beginner, Intermediate or Expert, picked before you play: the content and the clock change, and each level keeps its own best score.

Scoring

+100 for the most useful alt text, +100 for a fully fixed caption (partly fixed: +50).

Win with at least 70% of the points of the run. Your best score is kept in this browser, per level.

What it trains

Accessible posting

Alt text, subtitles, readable hashtags.

Writing clearly

Saying what matters in one line.

Strategy and tips

Say why it's posted

“A dog” is true; “Our new rescue dog, Biscuit, asleep on the doorstep on his first day home” is useful.

Skip “image of”

Screen readers already announce that it's an image.

Capitalise hashtags

#SmallBusinessSaturday is read word by word; #smallbusinesssaturday is not.

Why play Alt Text Ally?

Millions of people use screen readers or captions. A good description takes ten seconds and lets them enjoy the post too.
