Thank-You Note: free Christmas thank-you writing game
Write the perfect thank-you message: pick the warm opening, the specific detail and the sign-off.
What is Thank-You Note?
Six thank-you notes for six very different people: your grandma who knitted a scarf, a music teacher who wrote your reference, a seven-year-old cousin who drew your dog, a neighbour who cleared your path, a colleague, a stranger who handed in your lost backpack. Build each note line by line: a warm opening, one specific and true detail, and a sign-off that fits who they are to you.
Thank-You Note is a free Christmas writing game. Six people did something kind: a grandma knitted a scarf, a teacher wrote a reference, a little cousin drew your dog in the snow, a neighbour cleared your path, a colleague picked the perfect Secret Santa mug, a bus driver handed in your lost backpack. Each one deserves a note.
You write it line by line, from three choices each: a warm opening, one specific and true detail, and a sign-off. The right line depends on the person: a seven-year-old needs big, fun words, a teacher needs respect, a best friend needs you to sound like you. After each line you see why it works or falls flat, and the recipient's reaction when the note is sent.

How to play
- Read the card
- Who they are to you, what they gave or did, and what happened next.
- Three lines
- Pick the warm opening, the specific detail and the sign-off, one at a time.
- Match the tone
- Your grandma, your teacher and your best friend each need a different voice.
- Score
- 100 per line that's just right, 40 for a fine but flat one, +50 for a perfect note. Wrong details, money talk and backhanded thanks cost one of 3 hearts.
Scoring
100 points for each line that's just right, 40 for a fine but flat one, and 50 more for a perfect note. Six notes.
Lines that hurt the note (a wrong detail, money talk, a complaint, a backhanded thank-you) cost one of 3 hearts.
What it trains
- Warmth
- Opening with the person, by name.
- Specific detail
- One true detail that shows you noticed.
- Tone
- Matching the voice to a child, a teacher, a colleague or a best friend.
Strategy and tips
- Use their name
- A warm opening starts with the person, not with "To whom it may concern".
- One true detail
- Name the gift and what you did with it: the green scarf, sledging on Saturday.
- Get the facts right
- A wrong colour or a wrong dish tells them you didn't look.
- Leave money out
- No prices, no amounts, no "I'd have preferred…". The note is about the thought.
- Match the sign-off
- "Lots of love" for family, "With many thanks" for a teacher, "Big snowy hugs" for a young cousin.
Why play Thank-You Note?
A good thank-you note takes two minutes and is remembered for years. What makes it work is not fancy words but attention: the person's name, one specific detail that shows you noticed, and a tone that fits your relationship. Thank-You Note trains that attention, which carries over to every message you write to people, from cards to work emails.
Frequently asked questions
Is Thank-You Note free?
Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.
How is it different from Witch's Pitch?
Witch's Pitch is persuasion: making a crowd want to buy. Thank-You Note is gratitude: nothing is being sold, and the best line is the warm, true and specific one that fits the person.
Who is it for?
Everyone, from children writing their first thank-you cards to adults who want their notes to sound less like a form.
What costs a heart?
Lines that hurt the note: a wrong detail, talking about money, a complaint, a backhanded compliment, or a tone that's badly wrong for the person.
