Quick tips

• Use their name. A warm opening starts with the person, not with "To whom it may concern".
• One true detail. Name the gift and what you did with it: the green scarf, sledging on Saturday.
• Get the facts right. A wrong colour or a wrong dish tells them you didn't look.
• Leave money out. No prices, no amounts, no "I'd have preferred…". The note is about the thought.
• Match the sign-off. "Lots of love" for family, "With many thanks" for a teacher, "Big snowy hugs" for a young cousin.
