Job Interview Quest: free game to practise job interviews

Three rounds, one dream job. Pick answers that show who you are, without the clichés.

What is Job Interview Quest?

Thumby coaches you through three interview rounds for a junior marketing job: a screening call, a team interview where you build STAR answers piece by piece, and a final round that ends with the questions you ask them.

Job Interview Quest is a free story game to practise job interviews. Thumby coaches you through three rounds for a junior marketing job at Fernway, a made-up outdoor-gear shop, and every answer is explained.

The screening call asks the classics, like “tell me about yourself” and salary expectations: pick the answer that shows who you are, not the cliché. The team interview has you build STAR answers (Situation, Task, Action, Result) one piece at a time. The final round brings the weakness question and ends with the one people forget to prepare: “Do you have any questions for us?”

How to play

Screening call
Three classic questions. Pick the strong answer, not the cliché or the off-track one.
Team interview
Build two STAR answers: choose the stronger Situation, Task, Action and Result each time.
Final round
Two tough questions, then pick 3 good questions to ask them.
Score
+100 per strong pick, +50 per life left if you get the offer. A weak answer costs one of 3 lives.

Scoring

+100 for each strong pick (answers, STAR pieces and questions to ask: 16 in all), plus +50 per life left if you get the offer: 1,750 points max.

A weak answer, a STAR answer with fewer than 3 strong pieces or fewer than 2 good questions costs one of 3 lives. Lose all three and there's no offer.

What it trains

The STAR method
Answering “tell me about a time…” with a Situation, Task, Action and Result.
Avoiding clichés
Swapping “hard-working team player” and “perfectionist” for real examples.
Questions to ask
Ending the interview with questions about the work, the team and success in the role.

Strategy and tips

Proof beats adjectives
“Hard-working team player” says nothing. One example with a result says a lot.
Use STAR
Situation, Task, Action, Result: one line each, with what you did and what changed.
Say “I”, not “we”
Interviewers want your actions, not the team's.
Be honest about weaknesses
Name a real one and what you're doing about it. “Perfectionist” is a cliché.
Always ask questions
Ask about success in the first months, the team's challenges and how feedback works.

Why play Job Interview Quest?

Interviews reward preparation more than talent: people who have practised answering with concrete examples come across as calmer and more convincing. Spotting the difference between a strong answer and a cliché in a game makes it easier to hear in your own answers.
