Buffer Blocks: free sliding puzzle game (8-puzzle) online

Slide the blocks into the gap, one move at a time, until they are back in order and Buffer's bar is full.

What is Buffer Blocks?

Buffer is stuck loading. Slide the blocks into the gap, one move at a time, until they are back in order and the loading bar is full. A logic break that trains spatial reasoning: what has to move first so the rest can follow.

Buffer Blocks is one of the Zip & the Gang cabinets of the SkillXTube Arcade, played natively in SkillXGames. Its star is Buffer.

Buffer Blocks is the classic 8-puzzle, the sliding tile game with numbered blocks and one gap. Slide blocks into the gap one move at a time until they read 1 to 8, with the gap in the bottom-right corner. Each block in its place fills Buffer's loading bar.

Boards get more scrambled as you go, over 8 boards and 3 hearts. Solve in the fewest moves for a bonus, but too many moves jams the board and costs a heart.

How to play

Slide
Tap a block next to the gap (or use the arrow keys) to slide it in.
Order
Put the blocks back in order, 1 to 8, gap in the bottom-right corner.
Load
Each block in its place fills Buffer's bar. A full bar loads the next board.
Mind the jam
Too many moves, or a new board when stuck, costs a heart. 3 hearts per run.

What it trains

Buffer Blocks trains spatial reasoning and moving one piece at a time. It is a logic break in the "Spatial" family: short enough to fit between two tasks, deep enough to get better at.

Every ranked run you play on SkillXGames is dealt and checked by SkillXTube and counts for Team SkillXGames on the shared SkillXGames vs SkillXTube board.

Strategy and tips

Solve the top row first
Place 1, 2 and 3, then never move them again. Then the middle row, then the last two blocks.
Cycle blocks
To move a block without breaking the solved ones, rotate it around the gap in a small loop.
Corners are hardest
Place the corner tile of a row last, using the two cells next to it.
Don't wander
The jam limit is twice the fewest moves plus 8. If you are lost, a new board costs a heart: sometimes worth it.

Why play Buffer Blocks?

Sliding puzzles train spatial reasoning and planning under constraints: you can only move one piece, and each move changes what can move next. They also teach the problem-solving habit of breaking a big goal into smaller solved parts.

Frequently asked questions

Is Buffer Blocks free?

Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.

Is every board solvable?

Yes. Every board is scrambled from the solved position, so it can always be solved.

The board jams at twice the fewest possible moves plus 8.

Can I use the keyboard?

Yes, the arrow keys slide the blocks into the gap.
