Zodiac Memory: free Lunar New Year memory game

Twelve animals, twelve patterns. Remember the order.

What is Zodiac Memory?

Thumby leads a lantern parade of the twelve zodiac animals. Each round a new line walks past, all in view at once, then the lanterns go dark. Don't play it back: answer two questions about its order, like who walked right after the Tiger or where the Goat was.

Zodiac Memory is a free Lunar New Year memory game built on the twelve animals of the zodiac cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Thumby leads a lantern parade, and each round a new line of 3 to 8 animals walks past, all in view at once.

Then the lanterns go dark, and instead of playing the parade back you answer two questions about its order: who walked right after the Tiger, who was third, where the Goat was, who walked between the Dog and the Ox. Twelve rounds, one named after each animal, with a memory tip and a short zodiac fact after every round.

How to play

Study the parade
3 to 8 animals in a row, each on a numbered place. You have a few seconds; tap "Got it" to go early.
Lights out
The lanterns go dark. Answer two questions about the order: who came after or before, who was third, where an animal walked, who was in between.
Three lives
A wrong answer costs a life. Twelve rounds, one for each animal of the zodiac, with a memory tip and a zodiac fact after each.
Score
30 points plus 10 per animal in the parade for each right answer, +25 for a perfect round. A perfect run is 2,340.

Scoring

Each right answer scores 30 plus 10 per animal in the parade; both answers right in a round adds a 25-point perfect bonus. A perfect run scores 2,340.

Twelve rounds, parades from 3 to 8 animals; a wrong answer costs one of 3 lives.

What it trains

Sequence memory
Holding the order of a line, not just its items.
Working memory
Answering questions about what you saw after it's gone.
Memory strategies
Chunking, counting and linking, with a tip after each round.

Strategy and tips

Count while you look
"One Rat, two Horse, three Dog" ties each animal to its place number.
Chunk the line
Split a long parade into groups of three. Three small chunks beat one long list.
Make a tiny story
Link neighbours: the Rat rode the Dragon to the Pig's party.
Guard the middle
The first and last places stick on their own. Give the middle an extra look.
Replay before you read
When the lights go out, run through the parade once in your head, then read the question.

Why play Zodiac Memory?

Sequence memory is remembering not just what you saw but in which order, the skill behind directions, recipes, phone numbers and the steps of a task. Zodiac Memory tests it from many angles (neighbours, positions, what was in between), which builds a sturdier memory of the order than repeating it back.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zodiac Memory free?

Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.

How is it different from Pattern Recall?

Pattern Recall flashes a sequence and you repeat it. Here the whole parade is shown at once and you answer questions about its order, so you need to know where each animal stood.

Do I need to know the zodiac order?

No. Each parade is in a new random order. You'll pick up the traditional order from the facts after each round.

Is the Cat in the zodiac?

In Vietnam, the Cat takes the Rabbit's place, and the Water Buffalo the Ox's. The game uses the twelve animals shared most widely.
