Love Letter Lab: free Valentine's game for heartfelt notes
Write a sweet note: pick the warm opening, the specific detail and the sign-off.
What is Love Letter Lab?
Six short notes for six people in your life: a partner of six years, someone you've dated for three weeks, a best friend on Galentine's, a grandparent, a flatmate, a work friend. Build each note from a warm opening, a true detail and a sign-off, and land its warmth in that person's sweet spot.
Love Letter Lab is a free Valentine's Day writing game. Six people, six short notes: a partner of six years, someone you've dated for three weeks, a best friend on Galentine's, a grandparent, a stepdad, a flatmate, a work friend. Each note is built from three cards: a warm opening, a specific detail and a sign-off.
Every card carries a warmth of one to three hearts, and every person has a sweet spot. Big feelings fit a partner of years and rush a new date; romantic words confuse a friend, a grandparent or a colleague. The detail has to be true, too: each person's card says what really happened, and every answer explains why it works or doesn't.

How to play
- Read the person
- Who they are, the occasion, and what's really true about you two.
- Three cards
- Pick a warm opening, a specific detail and a sign-off. 100 for spot on, 40 for OK.
- Mind the warmth
- Each card has 1 to 3 hearts. Land the whole note in the sweet spot for +50.
- Three lives
- A miss (wrong memory, wrong tone, a complaint, a request) costs a life.
Scoring
100 points for each spot-on card, 40 for an OK one.
+50 when the finished note's warmth lands in the person's sweet spot.
A miss (wrong memory, wrong tone, a complaint or a request) scores nothing and costs one of 3 lives.
What it trains
- Specific detail
- Swap "you're always there for me" for one real, true moment.
- Matching the relationship
- Pitch the warmth to a partner, a new date, a friend, family or a colleague.
- Kind framing
- Keep a note a gift: no complaints, requests or unasked-for advice.
Strategy and tips
- Name one real moment
- "You're always there for me" is kind. "You stayed on the phone all night before my test" is unforgettable.
- Check the memory
- A wrong detail hurts more than no detail. If you're unsure, leave it out.
- Match the warmth
- Big words for a partner of years, a lighter touch for week three, friend-words for friends.
- Keep it a gift
- No complaints, no requests, no advice nobody asked for.
- Sign it like you
- A sign-off that sounds like you, and your name, beats a formal ending.
Why play Love Letter Lab?
A good note is short, specific and pitched to the person. Practising with made-up people makes it easier to write the real card, whoever it's for: a partner, a friend, family or a colleague.
