Gift Budget Elf: free Christmas budgeting game for gift lists
Twelve people, one budget. Pick gifts they'll love without blowing December.
What is Gift Budget Elf?
Twelve people are on the list and there's one example budget of $200 for all of them. Each person has two things they like and one to avoid; each gift has a price and tags. Pick one gift per person across three chapters (family, friends, neighbours and co-workers) and keep enough money for everyone still on the list.
Gift Budget Elf is a free Christmas money game. Twelve made-up people are on your list (family, friends, neighbours and co-workers) and you have one example budget of $200 for all of them. Each person has two things they like and one thing to avoid, and each gift has a price and a few tags.
Pick one gift per person, four people per chapter. A gift that hits both likes is a wow, one like is a love, and anything on the avoid list is a miss, however much it cost. You can't wrap a chapter that leaves too little for the people still on the list, and every dollar you keep at the end scores a point. At the end you see the best possible plan for the same list.

How to play
- One budget
- $200 for twelve people, in three chapters of four: about $16 each on average. All prices are examples.
- Read each person
- Two likes in green, one thing to avoid in red. An avoid beats a like.
- Pick one gift each
- Both likes = wow (150), one like = love (100), neither = fine (40), an avoid = miss (0). Price doesn't buy love.
- Keep enough for everyone
- You can't wrap a chapter that leaves too little for the people still to come. Every dollar left at the end is +1 point.
Scoring
Each gift scores by how well it fits the person: 150 for a wow (both likes), 100 for a love (one like), 40 for fine (neither), 0 for a miss (anything they avoid, even if it also matches a like).
At the end, every dollar left of the $200 budget adds 1 point, and you see the best possible score for the same list. Your best score is kept in this browser.
What it trains
- Budgeting for gifts
- Setting one total for the whole list and pacing it per person.
- Thoughtful choices
- Matching gifts to what people like instead of to the price tag.
- Keeping a reserve
- Leaving enough for everyone still on the list before treating anyone.
Strategy and tips
- Pace it per person
- Divide the budget by the number of people before you start: $200 for 12 is about $16 each.
- Read the avoid list first
- A gift that breaks someone's rule is a miss, even if it also matches a like.
- Cheap can be a wow
- Price doesn't buy love: some of the best matches cost under $15.
- Save the splurges
- Spend more only where the extra money turns a love into a wow.
- Keep a reserve
- Leave enough for the people still on the list before you treat anyone.
Why play Gift Budget Elf?
Gift season is where budgets break: lots of small decisions, one shared pot, and the urge to spend more to show you care. Setting a total, pacing it per person and matching gifts to what people actually like is the habit that keeps December generous and calm.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gift Budget Elf free?
Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.
Are the people and prices real?
No. Every person, gift and price is made up, and amounts are examples in dollars.
Is the most expensive gift the best one?
No. Points come from matching what each person likes, not from the price. Some wows are the cheapest gift on the page.
What happens if I spend too much early?
The game won't let you wrap a chapter that leaves too little for the people still to come, so you swap a gift for a cheaper one.
