Email Subject Showdown: free email marketing game

Two subject lines, one inbox. Guess which one gets opened, then see why.

What is Email Subject Showdown?

A bakery's regulars, a law firm's clients, sneaker fans, tired new parents: each round tells you who gets the email and what it's about, then shows two subject lines. Pick the one more of them would open. After each pick you see made-up example open rates and the email-marketing principle behind the winner.

Email Subject Showdown is a free email marketing game. Each round names an audience, like a bakery's regulars, a small law firm's clients or new parents, and what the email is about. Then two subject lines go head to head, and you pick the one more of those readers would open.

After every pick you see made-up example open rates and the principle behind the winner: say what's inside, front-load the offer for phone inboxes, skip the spam-filter shouting, keep it honest, and above all fit the audience. Later rounds pair the same trick with different crowds, so an emoji that wins with sneaker fans can lose with a law firm's clients.

Who gets the email and what it's about. The same trick can win with one crowd and flop with another.

Learn why
Every answer shows the principle behind it, with made-up example open rates.

Scoring

Each right pick scores 100 points, plus up to 50 for answering fast and up to 50 for a streak.

A wrong pick or running out of time costs one of 3 lives. 12 duels, from clear mistakes to the same trick with different audiences, with less time each round.

What it trains

Email marketing
What makes a subject line get opened: clarity, relevance and honesty.
Knowing your audience
Matching tone and detail to who is reading, from sneaker fans to a law firm's clients.
Inbox habits
Front-loading for phone screens and avoiding what looks like spam.

Strategy and tips

Start with the reader
Ask what this audience is waiting for. A shopper wants their tracking number, not a clever pun.
Front-load the point
Phones often show only the first 30 to 40 characters. Put the offer or the news first.
Calm beats loud
All caps, !!! and "FREE $$$" look like spam to people and to spam filters.
Specific wins
A date, an item, an amount: concrete details tell the right people the email is for them.
Match the tone
Emojis and slang can suit a young, casual audience and look out of place with a formal one.

Why play Email Subject Showdown?

The subject line decides whether an email gets read at all, and there's no one formula: what works depends on who is reading. Email Subject Showdown trains the habit marketers use before every send, picturing the audience and the inbox first, then choosing words that are clear, honest and relevant to them.

Frequently asked questions

Is Email Subject Showdown free?

Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.

Are the open rates real?

No. They're made-up example results that show the usual direction. Real open rates depend on your list, your sender name and much more, which is why marketers test their own subject lines.

Are the brands real?

No. Every brand, audience and email in the game is made up.

Can I play with a keyboard?

Yes. Press A or ← for the first subject line and B or → for the second. Every answer and explanation is also read out to screen readers.
