Backgammon: play free online, opening moves and strategy
Race your 15 checkers home against Brainrot. Hit blots, build points, bear off first. Gammons count double, backgammons triple.
What is Backgammon?
Full backgammon against Brainrot: hitting, the bar, doubles played four times, bearing off, gammons and backgammons. One game at a time, with no doubling cube.
Backgammon is a race with a fight in the middle. Each player has 15 checkers, two dice and one goal: bring every checker home and bear them all off first. Along the way you can hit lone checkers, build walls of points and trap your opponent behind them.
It belongs to a family of dice race games thousands of years old, from the Royal Game of Ur in ancient Mesopotamia to the Roman game Tabula, and the name backgammon appears in English in the 17th century. It's played all around the Mediterranean and the Middle East, as Tavla in Turkey, Tavli in Greece and Shesh Besh in Israel. The doubling cube, which lets players raise the stakes mid-game, was added in New York in the 1920s.
On SkillXGames you play white against Brainrot, with full rules except the cube. Both pip counts are shown on the table, the points you can reach light up when you pick a checker, and you can undo steps until you end your turn. A reload doesn't lose your game: you can resume it where you left it.

How to play
- Roll and move
- Move one checker by each die, or one checker by both. Doubles are played four times. You must use both dice if you can, or the larger one.
- Hit blots
- Land on a lone purple checker to send it to the bar. Your own checker on the bar must come back in before anything else moves.
- Build points
- Two checkers make a point nobody can land on. A row of points traps Brainrot's back checkers.
- Bear off
- Once all 15 are in your home board (points 1–6), take them off. First out wins 1, a gammon 2, a backgammon 3.
Scoring
A win is worth 1 point, a gammon 2 and a backgammon 3. There's no doubling cube.
Your score is 100 per point won plus the pips Brainrot still had to go. A loss scores 0.
What it trains
- Probability
- Counting the rolls that hit or miss before you leave a blot.
- Mental arithmetic
- Keeping track of the pip count in a race.
- Judging decisions
- Telling a good move from a lucky result.
Strategy and tips
- Learn the opening rolls
- Some first rolls have a clear best play. 3-1: 8/5 6/5 makes your 5-point. 4-2: 8/4 6/4 makes your 4-point. 6-1: 13/7 8/7 makes your bar point. 6-5: run a back checker, 24/13.
- Count the pips
- Your pip count is the total distance your checkers must travel to bear off. Both sides start at 167. In a pure race, a lead of around 10% is a strong edge.
- Know your shot odds
- A blot six points from an enemy checker is hit by 17 of the 36 rolls, nearly half. Blots 7 or more points away need a combination and are hit far less often.
- Build a prime
- Six points in a row is a full prime: checkers behind it can't pass. Even four or five in a row make escape very hard.
- Slot when it's cheap
- Placing a lone checker on a key point, to cover it next turn, is a risk. Do it when few enemy checkers can reach it or their home board is weak, so a hit costs little.
- Bear off safely
- If contact remains during the bear-off, clear points from the back first and avoid leaving a checker alone.
- Press for the gammon
- If Brainrot has checkers on the bar or stuck in your home board, keep attacking: a gammon scores 200 here and a backgammon 300, instead of 100.
Why play Backgammon?
Backgammon teaches you to think in probabilities. Every move weighs safety against progress, and counting the rolls that hit or miss turns a gut feeling into a decision. Pip counting adds a steady habit of quick mental arithmetic.
It's also the clearest lesson there is about luck and skill. The dice decide any single game, but good decisions win far more often over many games, so you learn to judge a move by its quality, not its result.
Frequently asked questions
Is Backgammon free?
Yes. It is free and runs in your browser, with no download. Signing up is optional.
How many pips do you start with in backgammon?
167 each. That's the total number of points all 15 of your checkers must travel to bear off from the starting position.
What is the best opening move in backgammon?
It depends on the roll. Classic choices are 3-1 to make the 5-point, 4-2 to make the 4-point and 6-1 to make the bar point. The opening roll can never be a double, because each player rolls one die.
Why is there no doubling cube?
The cube matters most in money play and matches. This table plays single games scored 1 for a win, 2 for a gammon and 3 for a backgammon, so the cube is left out.
How old is backgammon?
Dice race games go back about 5,000 years; the Royal Game of Ur, from around 2600 BC, is one of the oldest known boards. Modern backgammon took shape in England, where Edmond Hoyle published a guide to it in 1743.
