How to play Happy Families

The classic family-collecting game, with Zip and the gang: seven families of six, and a good memory wins.

The goal

Collect complete families. Each family has six members: Grandpa, Grandma, Dad, Mum, Son and Daughter. When every family is complete, the player with the most families wins.

Setting up

Seven families: the Zips, the Buffers, the Laters, the Skips, the Thumbys, the Brainrots and the Feeds.
Deal 6 cards to each player (7 for 2 or 3 players). The rest is the draw pile.

A turn, step by step

Ask. Ask any player for one exact card from a family you already hold: "In the Zip family, I'd like Grandma."
Get it. If they have it, they must give it to you, and you ask again.
Draw. If they don't, draw a card. If it's the card you asked for, show it and ask again; otherwise your turn ends.
Lay it down. As soon as you hold a whole family, lay it down in front of you.
End. The game ends when all seven families are down. Most families wins.

Beginner mistakes

✗ Not listening: Every question tells you who holds which family. Remember who asked for what.
✗ Asking for a family you don't hold: You may only ask for families you already have a card of.
✗ Asking the wrong player: Ask the player who recently asked for that family: they hold some of it.
✗ Showing your hand: Hold your cards close: what others know, they can ask for.
