Mini Bridge: learn bridge free online, play and strategy tips

Bridge for beginners with Buffer as your partner against Zip and Skip. Count points, choose the contract, then make your tricks.

What is Mini Bridge?

Mini Bridge, the classic way to learn bridge: no auction. The points are announced, the stronger pair declares, dummy goes face up and the declarer picks the contract. Four deals with Buffer against Zip and Skip.

Contract bridge is often called the king of card games: four players in two partnerships, an auction to name a contract, then thirteen tricks to make it. Mini Bridge keeps the card play and skips the hardest part for a beginner, the bidding system.

Contract bridge was devised by Harold Vanderbilt in 1925, building on whist and auction bridge, and became a worldwide craze in the 1930s. Mini Bridge was designed as a teaching game, and bridge clubs and schools use it to bring new players to the table. People also search for rubber bridge, duplicate bridge and Chicago, a scoring format played in sets of four deals.

On SkillXGames you sit South with Buffer as your partner, against Zip and Skip. When your side holds more points, you play both hands, yours and Buffer's; when Zip and Skip declare, you defend. Four deals make a match, and each deal is scored with real bridge values for partscores and games.

How to play

Points decide
Ace 4, King 3, Queen 2, Jack 1. The pair with more points declares; its stronger player is declarer and partner's hand goes face up as dummy.
The contract
The declarer picks trumps or no-trump: a partscore of 7 tricks, or game: 3NT is 9, 4♥ or 4♠ is 10, 5♣ or 5♦ is 11.
Tricks
The player on declarer's left leads. Follow suit if you can; the highest card of the suit led wins, unless a trump is played. Declarer plays dummy too.
Score
Tricks over six score 20 in ♣♦, 30 in ♥♠, 40 then 30 in NT, plus 50 for a partscore or 300 for game. Each trick short costs 50.

Scoring

Tricks over six score 20 each in ♣♦, 30 in ♥♠, 40 then 30 in NT, plus 50 for a partscore or 300 for game. Each trick short costs the declarers 50.

After 4 deals your score is 500 plus your pair's total minus theirs, never below 0.

What it trains

Counting
Keeping track of high-card points and the cards that have gone.
Partnership
Defending together and reading your partner's cards.

Strategy and tips

Plan at trick one
As declarer, look at both hands and count the tricks you can take straight away. If that's enough, take them. If not, decide where the extra tricks will come from before you play a card.
Pick trumps by fit
With eight or more cards of a suit between your two hands, that suit usually makes a good trump. With no eight-card fit and some cover in every suit, try no-trump.
Bid game with the points
As a rough guide, a pair with about 25 or 26 high-card points can often make 3NT or four of a major. With fewer, take the partscore.
Ruff in the short hand
Extra tricks come from trumping losers in the hand with fewer trumps, usually dummy. Ruffing in the long hand doesn't add a trick.
Set up long suits
In no-trump, a long suit is a trick factory. Give up a trick early to establish the rest, while you still have a way back to that hand.
Eight ever, nine never
Missing the Queen of a suit? With eight cards between both hands, finesse for it. With nine, play the Ace and King and hope she falls.
Lead with purpose
On defence against no-trump, lead the fourth-highest card of your longest suit. Against a trump contract, the top of a sequence like K-Q-J is a safe start.

Why play Mini Bridge?

Bridge is a game of counting and planning: counting points, counting tricks and counting the cards that have gone. As declarer you make a plan from two hands at once, which trains you to see the whole problem before acting.

It's also a partnership game. Even in Mini Bridge, defending well means reading your partner's cards and helping each other. Many players stay with bridge for life, and this is a gentle way to start.

Yes. Following suit, trumps, dummy, finesses and counting tricks are all identical. Once you're comfortable, the next step is an opening-bid system to replace the point announcement.

How many points do you need for game in bridge?

As a guide, about 25 to 26 high-card points between the partners for 3NT, 4♥ or 4♠, and about 29 for 5♣ or 5♦. A good trump fit or long suit can need fewer.

Who invented contract bridge?

Harold Vanderbilt, in 1925. He added scoring that rewards bidding exactly what you can make, which turned auction bridge into the game played today.
